The il COSMO – Susumu Shingu exhibition is the first large-scale exhibition in Italy to trace the life of Japanese artist Susumu Shingu, known for his sculptures that draw their energy from natural forces such as wind and water.
In 1960, Susumu Shingu traveled to Italy on a government scholarship and spent most of his twenties in Rome. His artistic expression evolved from two-dimensional painting to three-dimensional sculpture, and ultimately to kinetic art.
To truly understand this artist - who, as he celebrates his 89th birthday, continues to create with undiminished vitality - one cannot overlook this period of his life, which was brimming with youthful energy and innovative ideas.
This dynamic exhibition - the first at Fabbrica del Vapore to utilize both the Cattedrale, the venue’s largest exhibition hall, and its outdoor spaces . Additionally, on October 3 and 4 during the exhibition period, a musical titled Sandarino and Friends will be staged, featuring children from Sanda City, Hyogo Prefecture, performing alongside children from Milan.

The pre-opening event on June 16 was attended by, from the left, Maria Fraterri - Director of Fabbrica del Vapore, Yasuko Shingu, Susumu Shingu, Rossella Menegazzo - Associate Professor at the University of Milan, and Mitsuhiro Wada - Chief Consul at the Consulate General of Japan in Milan.
Over the course of two days - the pre-opening on the 16th and the opening on the 17th - musicians Takumi Seino and MIKIKO performed the Strawberry Suite, a tribute to Susumu Shingu’s picture book Strawberry. The exhibition space and the music blended beautifully to create a wonderful atmosphere, and the performance was very well received by everyone.
